About Amazon.com Inc.

Amazon (AMZN) is one of the largest US-listed companies by market capitalisation, with annual revenue of roughly $620 billion across three reporting segments: North America (around 61% of revenue, includes US retail and Prime), International (around 22%), and Amazon Web Services (around 17%, around $110 billion annual run rate). The mix matters because the segments have very different economics: retail runs on low single-digit operating margins, while AWS runs above 35% operating margin and is the company's primary profit engine. AWS is the largest public cloud platform by revenue, with roughly 31% market share versus Azure at 25% and Google Cloud at 11%. Quarterly AWS growth has stepped from a low of 12% during the 2023 enterprise cost-cutting cycle back into the high teens and now 19 to 20% as AI workloads rebuild backlog. AWS operating income alone is over $40 billion annual run rate, comparable to the entire net income of most S&P 500 companies. Advertising is the third growth engine, now over $50 billion annual revenue with margins implied above AWS levels. Amazon's ad business sits inside the retail flywheel: sellers buy sponsored placements on the retail platform, which compounds with Prime Video ad-supported tier and DSP off-Amazon inventory. The retail business is in a multi-year regionalisation programme: splitting US fulfilment into eight regional networks, expanding rural and same-day delivery, and rolling robotics into fulfilment centres. The aim is to grow units while compressing cost-to-serve. At LHFX you trade AMZN as a Contract for Difference. What moves AMZN

  • 01AWS revenue and operating margin. AWS reports each quarter in late January or early February, late April, late July or early August, and late October. AWS growth rate, backlog (Remaining Performance Obligations), and operating margin set the multiple. A surprise in the growth line moves the stock 5 to 9%.
  • 02North America retail operating margin. Retail margins are the most-debated line item. Each percentage point of NA segment operating margin is worth several billion dollars of annual profit. Investors watch unit economics, shipping cost, and the pace of regionalisation savings.
  • 03Advertising revenue growth. Ad revenue is now growing at 18 to 26% year on year off a $50 billion-plus base. Sponsored products on retail, Prime Video ads, and DSP off-Amazon inventory are the three components. Surprises on the ad line have driven re-ratings.
  • 04Holiday-quarter retail demand. The fourth-quarter print (late January or early February) is the largest retail quarter of the year. Unit growth and operating margin against guide drive the next two quarters' multiple.
  • 05AI infrastructure capex. Amazon is spending over $80 billion annual capex, with the majority on AWS AI data centres including Trainium custom silicon. Capex prints, depreciation flow-through, and management commentary on AI revenue ramp move the stock.

How to trade AMZN at LHFX

Add AMZN to your MT5 Market Watch. The instrument trades during NASDAQ regular hours, Monday to Friday 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET. Commission is $3 per side, leverage up to 1:20. Daily moves on AMZN are typically 1.5 to 3% on a regular session and 5 to 10% on earnings days. The stock is more volatile than AAPL or MSFT because the AWS line is the headline number and retail margin is the second derivative. Earnings drops late in January or early February, late April, late July or early August, and late October. The post-print conference call frequently re-rates the stock based on AWS commentary even after the headline number prints in line. Worked example, illustrative numbers. On a $3,000 account at an AMZN price of $200, a 0.5 lot CFD position controls 50 shares worth $10,000 of notional exposure. At 1:20 leverage the margin requirement is roughly $500, or 17% of your account. A 7% adverse move from $200 to $186 costs $700, which is 23% of your account. To keep an earnings-day gap inside a 2% loss budget you size to 0.04 lots (4 shares of notional exposure), where a 7% adverse-move costs about $56. Reduce or close positions into the Amazon print. Holiday-quarter and AWS-deceleration prints have produced 8 to 11% single-day moves multiple times in the last three years.

Risks specific to AMZN

Two AMZN-specific risk factors. AWS deceleration risk: AWS is the profit engine that justifies the stock's multiple. A growth slowdown to mid-teens (or below) compresses the multiple sharply, particularly when Azure is growing faster. The 2023 AWS slowdown took AMZN from $170 to $80 over a ten-month period. Retail margin compression risk. North America segment operating margins can compress on shipping cost, wage inflation, fuel, or peak-season fulfilment overspend. A 100 basis point miss on NA operating margin can take several billion dollars off projected annual profit, which the multiple then prices in. Mitigations. Effective leverage 1:5 or lower. Stop loss on every position. Position smaller into earnings days. Watch hyperscaler capex commentary (Microsoft, Google) on adjacent prints for read-throughs to AWS.
