About Microsoft Corporation
Microsoft (MSFT) is the second-largest US-listed company by market capitalisation, with annual revenue of roughly $245 billion split across three reporting segments: Productivity and Business Processes (around 33% of revenue, includes Office 365 commercial, LinkedIn, Dynamics), Intelligent Cloud (around 44%, includes Azure, server products, enterprise services, GitHub), and More Personal Computing (around 23%, includes Windows OEM, Surface devices, Xbox content and services, search and advertising).
Azure is the single most important line. Microsoft does not split out Azure revenue precisely, but consensus puts annual Azure revenue near $90 billion and growing 27 to 31% year on year. Azure trails AWS in absolute size but has been gaining share for several years, with the OpenAI partnership and Azure AI services as the most-discussed share-gain story in enterprise software since 2022.
The company's strategic positioning is unusually broad: the productivity suite (Microsoft 365 and Copilot) sits on roughly 400 million paid commercial seats, the cloud platform competes head-to-head with AWS and Google Cloud, the gaming platform (Xbox plus Activision Blizzard, acquired in 2023 for $69 billion) is the third largest in the world, and LinkedIn is the largest professional network with around 1 billion members.
At LHFX you trade MSFT as a Contract for Difference. You profit or lose based on the MSFT share price moving in or against your position, with leverage up to 1:20 and a flat $3 per side commission. You do not own the underlying share, do not receive cash dividends, and have no voting rights. On ex-dividend dates the cash dividend is applied as a dividend adjustment to long and short CFD positions. Settlement is in USD.
What moves MSFT
- 01Azure growth rate. Microsoft reports Azure year-on-year growth each quarter (late October, late January, late April, late July, all after the bell). A surprise of even 1 to 2 percentage points versus consensus moves the stock 3 to 6%. AWS and Google Cloud growth comparisons set the relative-share narrative.
- 02Capital expenditure on AI infrastructure. Microsoft is spending over $60 billion annual capex, the majority on AI compute. Investors watch quarterly capex prints, the ramp profile, and management commentary on returns on AI investment. A capex print that is materially above guide can compress free-cash-flow expectations.
- 03Copilot adoption and pricing. Microsoft 365 Copilot is sold at $30 per user per month on top of the base licence. Enterprise attach rates, large-customer announcements, and management's tone on Copilot revenue are tracked at every quarterly print.
- 04OpenAI partnership status. Microsoft's roughly $13 billion investment in OpenAI and the exclusive Azure compute relationship are central to the AI narrative. Any change in OpenAI corporate structure, exclusivity terms, or partnership scope is a single-session driver.
- 05PC unit demand and Windows OEM. Windows OEM revenue is tied to global PC shipments. Quarterly PC unit data from IDC and Gartner sets the baseline. PC refresh cycles, including the Windows 10 end-of-support deadline in October 2025, drive OEM revenue swings.
How to trade MSFT at LHFX
Add MSFT to your MT5 Market Watch. The instrument trades during NASDAQ regular hours, Monday to Friday 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET. Commission is $3 per side, leverage up to 1:20.
Daily moves on MSFT are typically 1 to 2% on a regular session and 4 to 7% on earnings days. Size positions so a 5% adverse move costs no more than 2% of your account.
Earnings drops in late October, late January, late April, and late July after the bell. The Azure growth number is the single most-watched data point; a 1 to 2 percentage point miss can compress the stock 5% or more in pre-market.
Worked example, illustrative numbers. On a $5,000 account at an MSFT price of $400, a 0.5 lot CFD position controls 50 shares worth $20,000 of notional exposure. At 1:20 leverage the margin requirement is roughly $1,000, or 20% of your account. A 5% adverse move from $400 to $380 costs $1,000, which is 20% of your account. To keep the same trade inside a 2% loss budget you size down to 0.05 lots (5 shares of notional exposure), where the 5% adverse-move cost is $100.
Many CFD traders fade large pre-print runs or wait one full session after the print to enter a directional position, because Microsoft prints can be re-rated by management's call commentary on Azure mix and capex even after the headline beat or miss.
Risks specific to MSFT
Two MSFT-specific risk factors. AI capex compression risk: Microsoft is spending over $60 billion per year on data centres and Nvidia GPUs to power Azure AI. If AI workload demand does not justify the spend on a return-on-invested-capital basis, the market resets the multiple. The capex print line has moved the stock 5 to 8% on a single quarter on more than one occasion in the last two years.
Azure decel risk. Azure growth has decelerated from above 40% in 2022 to the high 20s and low 30s more recently. Each quarter's growth number versus AWS sets the relative-multiple narrative. A miss can compress the cloud-leader premium in the stock.
Mitigations. Effective leverage 1:5 or lower. Stop loss on every position. Size positions so a 5 to 7% adverse gap costs no more than 2% of account. Treat the post-print conference call as a re-rating event distinct from the headline.
