About Shopify Inc.

Shopify (SHOP) is a Canadian software-as-a-service company that provides the technology platform to roughly 5 million merchants to sell online and in person. It was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lutke and Scott Lake in Ottawa, IPO'd on the NYSE and TSX in May 2015, and currently trades on both exchanges. Tobias Lutke remains CEO. The company is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The business runs across two reporting segments. Subscription Solutions covers the monthly platform fees that merchants pay across the Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus pricing tiers. Merchant Solutions is the much larger and faster-growing line, covering Shopify Payments (Shopify's own card-acquiring product), Shopify Shipping (fulfilment and label services), Shopify Capital (working-capital loans to merchants), and Shop Pay (the consumer-facing accelerated-checkout product). Merchant Solutions revenue scales with merchant gross merchandise volume (GMV), so the company increasingly looks more like a payments and platform business than a pure software subscription business. Shopify exited its first-party logistics ambitions in mid-2023, selling Shopify Logistics to Flexport in exchange for Flexport equity, refocusing the company on core software and payments products. Around 30% of Shopify's revenue comes from international merchants outside North America, a share that has grown each year. At LHFX you trade SHOP as a CFD on the share price (NYSE-listed shares), not by owning the stock. You profit or lose based on SHOP moving in or against your position, can go long or short, and never receive the underlying shares. Settlement is in USD. SHOP does not currently pay a dividend. The stock trades on the NYSE in US dollars at a typical price between $60 and $130, with no dividend. Maximum leverage at LHFX is 1:20.

What moves SHOP

  • 01Quarterly GMV growth. Merchant Solutions revenue scales with GMV, so the quarterly GMV print is the single biggest driver of the stock. Watch international GMV growth (faster than North America in recent quarters) and B2B GMV (a newer growth line).
  • 02Q4 holiday peak. November and December (Black Friday Cyber Monday plus the full holiday shopping window) is the most concentrated GMV window of the year. Shopify publishes a real-time GMV tracker during BFCM weekend.
  • 03Shopify Payments attach rate. The share of GMV that runs through Shopify Payments rather than third-party gateways drives Merchant Solutions revenue per dollar of GMV. Recent disclosures show penetration above 60% of GMV.
  • 04AI and platform announcements. Shopify has rolled out Sidekick (AI assistant), Shop AI search, and Shopify Magic (generative-AI tools for merchants). New AI announcements and adoption metrics move the stock.
  • 05Quarterly earnings, mid-month in February, May, August, and November. Watch revenue growth (excluding logistics-divestiture impact), free cash flow, operating margin, and any updated outlook on operating expenses.

How to trade SHOP at LHFX

Open an LHFX account and fund it. Minimum deposit is $10. Card and bank deposits clear within minutes in most jurisdictions. Open MetaTrader 5 or the LHFX Trade web platform and search for SHOP. Add it to your Market Watch. Spreads are raw with a flat $3/side commission, so the round-trip cost is $6 plus the bid-ask. SHOP US single-name CFDs trade during NYSE regular hours, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC Monday to Friday. Size your position to your account. SHOP is a high-beta growth stock and moves more than the US financials. Daily moves of 2 to 4% are routine, and earnings gaps of 8 to 15% have happened in several recent quarters. At 1:20 leverage, a 5% adverse move wipes out your margin, and SHOP can do that intraday on a bad print. Set a stop loss before entry. SHOP gaps on earnings, on competitive announcements from Amazon and other commerce platforms, and on macro consumer-spending data. A leveraged position without a stop is exposed to forced liquidation. Track Q4 closely if you hold SHOP into the holiday season. BFCM weekend produces large intraday moves on the Shopify real-time GMV tracker. Holding leveraged positions through that weekend without a stop is a binary trade. Worked example. On a $1,000 account with SHOP trading at $100, opening 0.2 lots of SHOP CFD (20 shares notional) is $2,000 of notional. At 1:20 leverage, that requires $100 of margin. A 5% adverse SHOP move on that position costs $100, or 10% of your account. A 5% favourable move makes $100. Round-trip commission is $6. Run the same math before every entry.

Risks specific to SHOP

Shopify is a high-beta growth stock that trades on revenue-growth expectations and on the broader Nasdaq-100 sentiment. A weaker-than-expected quarterly GMV print can drop SHOP 10 to 15% on the open. At 1:20 leverage, that is 200 to 300% of margin loss on a fully-leveraged position held through earnings. The second risk is competitive and macro consumer exposure. Amazon's growing seller-services business, TikTok Shop, and other commerce platforms compete with Shopify merchants. A sustained US consumer-spending pullback also hits merchant GMV directly. SHOP fell more than 80% from its November 2021 high during the 2022 growth-stock drawdown before partially recovering, which illustrates how far the stock can move on a sentiment reset. Mitigations. Use effective leverage of 1:5 or lower; many experienced growth-stock CFD traders run SHOP at 1:2 to 1:3 effective leverage. Flatten leveraged positions ahead of SHOP earnings and BFCM weekend. Set a stop loss before every entry. Size positions so a 15% adverse move costs no more than 3% of your account.
