Where USDCAD closed the week

USDCAD opened the week of 2026-10-19 at 1.41186, printed its high at 1.41273 inside the Monday session, then spent the next four days grinding lower. The weekly low came on Friday at 1.39967, and the pair settled at 1.40112. That is a net loss of about 107 pips, or roughly 0.76 percent, and it was a one-way week: every single daily close from Monday through Thursday was lower than the one before it.

What moved price

The selling was mechanical rather than headline driven. Monday closed at 1.41064, Tuesday ripped through support to a 1.40319 low and closed at 1.40668, Wednesday gave up another 24 pips to close at 1.40426, and Thursday closed at 1.40026 after tagging 1.40008. There was no single shock print in the bundle to pin it on. What you had instead was four consecutive sessions where every rally attempt failed below the prior day's close, with Tuesday and Thursday each clearing more than 70 pips of daily range on the two heaviest volume sessions of the week.

The broader dollar tape was not uniformly weak. On 23 October the PBOC set its USD/CNY reference rate weaker than the Reuters estimate that had circulated earlier that morning, a reminder that dollar strength was still being managed elsewhere in Asia. Europe pulled the other way: MUFG published an ECB preview on 22 October calling for an October hold with two hikes further out, a stance that supported EUR/USD and kept broad dollar demand capped. USDCAD traders got the downside of that combination without any Canadian catalyst to offset it.

The week ahead

The calendar in this bundle carries no scheduled high-impact releases for the coming week, so the burden falls on price structure and on whatever lands unscheduled. Treat the two themes already in play as the live variables. If the PBOC keeps fixing USD/CNY weaker than the Reuters estimate, broad dollar bids tend to firm across the Asian session, and USDCAD has historically tracked that bid in the hours before the North American open. If the fixes come in at or below estimate, that support is absent and the pair is left to trade off oil and local flow. On the European side, confirmation of the ECB hold that MUFG flagged would remove a euro-positive catalyst and relieve some of the pressure on the dollar index, while a hawkish surprise does the opposite. Friday's volume of 7,845 was a fraction of the 44,370 printed on Thursday, so the first full-volume session of the new week is where the real test of the 1.4000 break happens.

Positioning

As of 2026-10-23, LHFX client positioning in USDCAD sat at 51.5 percent long against 48.5 percent short. That is close to flat. A three point skew after a 107 pip decline tells you the crowd is not leaning hard into a bounce, and it is not pressing the short side either. Consensus has thinned out rather than concentrated, which means there is no large trapped cohort to squeeze in either direction. Near-balanced books like this one tend to offer weaker contrarian signal than lopsided ones, so you get less information from sentiment here than you would at a 70/30 reading.

Levels to watch

1.39967 is the week's low and the only print below the 1.4000 handle in five sessions. If price closes back above 1.40112 and holds, the first obvious resistance is Wednesday's 1.40817 high, with the weekly high at 1.41273 beyond that. If 1.39967 gives way on a full-volume session, the figure flips from floor to ceiling and the pair trades without a nearby reference from this week's range. The 1.40008 and 1.40319 lows from Thursday and Tuesday both sit inside a 35 pip band, so expect that zone to matter on any retest from below. We publish updated levels on the instrument page each session, and you can follow the pair in live conditions through an LHFX account.
