Where AUDUSD closed the week

AUDUSD opened the week at 0.69713, dipped to a Monday low of 0.69615, then worked higher to a Thursday high of 0.70362 before settling at 0.70117 on Friday. That is a net gain of 40 pips, or 0.58 percent, with the full weekly range running from 0.69615 up to 0.70362. The big figure at 0.7000 was reclaimed on Tuesday and defended every day after it.

What moved price

The clearest driver came out of China. The PBOC set its USD/CNY reference rate on Friday above the level Reuters polling looked for, a fix weaker for the yuan than the market had positioned around. AUDUSD is the liquid proxy for China risk, and the pair gave back ground on the session, slipping from the 0.7019 Thursday close to 0.70117. The move was shallow. Friday volume printed 11,691 against 57,663 on Thursday, so the drift lower came on thin participation rather than conviction selling.

The heavy lifting happened mid week. Tuesday pushed through 0.7000 and closed at 0.70058, and Wednesday extended to 0.70357 with a close at 0.70283. Thursday was the busiest session of the week on volume and produced the widest daily range, 0.69936 to 0.70362, a two way fight that ended with the high unbroken. Euro news flow sat in the background: a published ECB preview from MUFG looked for an October hold with two hikes to follow, a hawkish read that kept the dollar from running away against the majors. If you track EUR/USD alongside the Aussie, the dollar side of both pairs behaved the same way this week while the China headline split them.

The week ahead

The calendar in this bundle carries no scheduled high impact releases for the coming week, so the drivers stay the ones already in play. The daily PBOC fix is the first of them. If the fixes keep landing weaker for the yuan than the Reuters estimate, the typical reaction in AUDUSD is selling pressure into the Asian session, with the pair handing back part of this week's gain. If the fixes print at or stronger than estimate, that pressure lifts and the Aussie usually tracks broader dollar flow instead. The second driver is the ECB path. A hawkish repricing of European rates pulls the dollar index lower and tends to lift AUDUSD by default, while any softening of that view does the opposite. Watch whether Monday's cash open holds above the 0.7000 handle, because that is where the week's bid was built.

Positioning

Retail positioning as of 2026-10-23 sits at 46.3 percent long against 53.7 percent short. That is a modest short skew into a week that closed higher, meaning the majority of retail accounts were leaning against the move. The skew is narrow, so it reads as disagreement rather than crowding, and it leaves a pool of short stops sitting above the week's high.

Levels to watch

0.70362 is the week's high and the first clear line. If price closes above it, the next obvious reference is the round 0.7050 area, and the short side of that 53.7 percent skew is the fuel. 0.7000 is the pivot underneath, reclaimed on Tuesday and never lost on a closing basis since. A daily close back below it puts the 0.69936 Thursday low and then the 0.69615 weekly low back in play. Between those two, the pair is simply range bound and the week's structure stays intact.
