The short version
- BAYGn trades on Xetra in euros, settles in T+2 on the cash market, and on LHFX it is offered as a CFD with up to 1:20 leverage and a 3 USD per-side commission.
- Roughly half of group revenue is prescription pharmaceuticals, four-tenths is crop science (the former Monsanto), and the rest is consumer health (Aspirin, Berocca, Bepanthen).
- Roundup litigation in US courts is the single biggest mover. Bayer has provisioned 16 billion USD through 2024 and any Supreme Court denial or large jury verdict tends to print a 5-10% single-day candle on the chart.
- Xarelto and Eylea are losing exclusivity. Asundexian and elinzanetant Phase 3 read-outs are what replaces those revenue lines, so trial-data days matter for valuation, not just sentiment.
- Around 32% of revenue is booked in USD, so EUR/USD nudges translated earnings and creates a tidy macro overlay on top of the company-specific catalysts.
What Bayer actually sells
Bayer is best understood as three businesses bolted to one balance sheet. The pharmaceutical arm researches and sells prescription drugs in cardiology, oncology, women's health and ophthalmology, and it generated close to half of the 46.6 billion euro 2024 group top line. The crop science arm sells seeds, traits and crop-protection chemistry to commercial farmers across the US Midwest, Brazil, India and Europe, and it inherited the Roundup herbicide franchise when the group closed the 63 billion USD acquisition of Monsanto in 2018. The consumer health arm sells over-the-counter household names like Aspirin and Bepanthen and is the smallest of the three.
What makes Bayer unusual against the rest of the DAX is the proportion of risk that sits outside the operating business. The 2018 Monsanto deal also imported the Roundup product-liability docket, and as of the 2024 annual report Bayer has set aside roughly 16 billion USD in aggregate provisions for those US claims. The pharmaceutical division is simultaneously working through the loss-of-exclusivity on Xarelto (an anticoagulant) and Eylea (a wet-AMD eye drop), two products that have between them produced a meaningful slice of pharma operating profit for the last decade. That combination explains why the equity has traded with implied volatility well above the DAX 40 average since 2019.
Geographically, sales break out around 28% Europe, Middle East and Africa, 32% North America, 25% Asia-Pacific, and 15% Latin America. The Latin American share is largely Crop Science. The North American share is split roughly evenly between Crop Science (where it dominates) and Pharma.
The three operating divisions, in proportion
Different divisions react to different macro signals. A trader looking at BAYGn over a single quarter needs to know which division drove that print before reading the chart.
Pharma carries the highest gross margin but also the heaviest patent-cliff and pipeline risk. Crop Science is roughly half the revenue base but a third of it sits in genuine commodity-cycle territory, so it amplifies the global ag cycle the way an oil major amplifies Brent. Consumer Health is the steady block, which is why activist investors have repeatedly floated separating it out to surface a defensive-staples multiple.
What actually moves BAYGn day to day
Five catalyst categories explain almost every double-digit single-day candle on the BAYGn weekly chart since 2019. Rank them by recency before placing any swing trade.
US Roundup verdicts and Supreme Court actions
The active glyphosate docket still includes tens of thousands of plaintiffs even after the multi-tranche settlement programme. Single jury verdicts can run into nine figures, and procedural rulings from the US Supreme Court on preemption can shift the expected liability by billions. Either category routinely moves the share 5 to 10% on the session of the news.
Phase 3 pipeline read-outs
Asundexian, an oral Factor XIa inhibitor positioned as a successor to Xarelto, has already missed a primary endpoint once. Elinzanetant for vasomotor menopausal symptoms is the other watched read. Sell-side peak-sales models for these two assets explain a large portion of the DCF rebuild, so trial-data days are large-print sessions.
Crop Science quarterly volume and pricing
US planted-acreage data for corn and soybeans, Brazilian safrinha conditions, and global glyphosate spot pricing flow directly into Crop Science guidance. Generic Chinese glyphosate supply gluts have compressed margins more than once since 2022.
EUR/USD translation and ECB path
Around 32% of group sales report in USD. A 5% weaker USD against the euro compresses translated revenue at the headline line before any operational change. Days when EUR/USD spikes on an ECB or Fed surprise tend to drag BAYGn relative to the rest of the DAX 40.
Strategic-review headlines
CEO Bill Anderson took over in June 2023 and launched a flatter operating model alongside an ongoing review of group structure. Any leak that the board is moving towards separating Consumer Health or Crop Science is treated as a clear sum-of-the-parts catalyst.
How BAYGn behaves around earnings
Bayer reports four times a year on a calendar-quarter schedule, with the full-year release usually landing in late February or early March, Q1 in early May, Q2 in early August and Q3 in early November. The full-year print also carries forward-year guidance, the next-12-month dividend proposal, and the standard rolling update to the litigation provision.
Historically the Q2 print has tended to produce the largest absolute move because it lands inside the European reporting peak and coincides with the mid-year strategic-review update. Q3 prints tend to be quieter because they precede the November capital-markets day at which the more material structural news has usually been pre-released.
For a CFD trader, the more useful pattern is the gap. BAYGn has gapped 4% or more on six of the last 16 reporting dates, almost always on either a Crop Science volume miss or a re-stated litigation provision. Holding leveraged exposure across the print is closer to a binary trade than a directional one, which is why most desks either flatten or hedge through the report.
When BAYGn is open for trading
BAYGn quotes on the Frankfurt Xetra electronic order book. On LHFX that translates into a window of roughly 03:00 to 11:30 New York time, Monday to Friday, with no extended-hours session before or after the cash open. Liquidity is deepest in the first 30 minutes after the open at 09:00 Frankfurt time and again in the closing auction. Spreads typically tighten through the European morning and widen modestly into the lunch lull. Public holidays on the Xetra calendar suspend trading entirely; the standard breaks are Easter, German Unity Day on 3 October, and the 24 to 26 December and 31 December cluster.
BAYGn CFD vs holding the share vs trading options
Three credible routes to express a view on Bayer. The mechanics, costs and trading friction differ on every line.
Why most BAYGn flow goes through the CFD route
Holding a registered Xetra share gives you voting rights at the annual general meeting in Bonn, the cash dividend (subject to German withholding tax at 26.375% with treaty relief paperwork), and the cleanest possible legal title. It also locks you into 1:1 capital efficiency, sometimes 1:2 inside a Reg-T-style margin account, with explicit borrow fees on any short and a slower settlement cycle.
A CFD on the same underlying gives you synthetic exposure that mirrors the cash price tick for tick, with a clean entry on the long or short side from the same MT5 ticket, no borrow locate, and a dividend cash adjustment posted on the ex-date so the net P&L matches the dividend you would have received as a holder. The trade-off is that you never appear on the share register, you do not receive shareholder communications, you carry a daily financing accrual on the notional position, and the 1:20 leverage cap is wide enough to cause real damage on a litigation-driven gap. For most retail and prop flow looking to express a tactical view across a single earnings cycle or court date, the CFD wins on speed and on cost. For a multi-year buy-and-hold view, direct ownership is the cleaner instrument.
Trading BAYGn at LHFX, with a worked example
On LHFX, BAYGn sits in the German Stocks group on the MT5 Market Watch. Execution is STP/ECN on MT5 with order routing into the underlying Xetra book during cash hours. Pricing is the raw exchange spread with a flat commission of 3 USD per side, the leverage cap is 1:20, and the minimum funded account is 10 USD.
A practical example using different numbers than the marketing copy. Assume a 4,000 USD funded account, a base in USD, and an entry on a Tuesday at 49.00 EUR following a Phase 3 readout that the trader believes is being mispriced. EUR/USD is at 1.13 for the working day. Buying 80 share equivalents of BAYGn long ties up notional of 3,920 EUR (around 4,430 USD). At the 1:20 cap, required margin is 196 EUR, or about 221 USD, which is 5.5% of account equity.
Commission on the open is 2.40 USD (3 USD per side per standard lot on 0.80 lots). A 1 EUR move in the share equals 80 EUR of P&L, around 90 USD. A typical 2.5% trading day on BAYGn is 1.23 EUR of range, or roughly 111 USD of fluctuation against this position. A 10% adverse gap, which has happened twice on glyphosate news inside the last 18 months, is 4.90 EUR of price, equating to 392 EUR of P&L loss, around 443 USD, or 11.1% of account equity, on a position only using 5.5% of equity as posted margin. That is the leverage maths that catches new BAYGn traders off-guard. The disciplined response is to size off the realistic worst-case gap and not off the posted margin.
Closing the trade flat costs another 2.40 USD in commission. Overnight financing is accrued on the full notional and shows inside the MT5 symbol specification window. The dividend cash adjustment, when BAYGn next trades ex-dividend, is posted automatically to the account.
The risks that actually matter
Three risks sit on top of the standard list and deserve to be sized for explicitly.
Litigation tail risk. The 16 billion USD provision is an accounting estimate of known and modelled cases. New filings, new active ingredients drawn into mass tort, or an unhelpful US Supreme Court signal on preemption can all expand the liability past the provision. Provisions get re-stated at the next reporting date, and the share reacts in advance of that statement on the rumour.
Pipeline replacement risk. Xarelto and Eylea are losing high-margin revenue on a known timetable. The clinical assets meant to replace them are not approved yet, and pharmaceutical Phase 3 read-outs are well known for failing. A second asundexian disappointment would force the sell-side DCF to drop the pipeline contribution, and that re-rating tends to happen inside one session.
Leverage and gap risk. With Xetra closing at 11:30 ET and US news flowing through the rest of the American afternoon, BAYGn can gap several percent on the Wednesday open in response to a Tuesday-evening US court decision while the trader is asleep. Stops do not protect against gaps. The mitigation is position sizing that survives a 10% adverse open, not a tight stop that gets overrun.
The boring mitigations work. Use the demo for at least one full earnings cycle. Cap single-name exposure at a fraction of equity that lets you take more than one shot. Avoid layering leveraged exposure across earnings, Phase 3 catalysts, and scheduled court dates.
