About Bayer
Bayer AG is a German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences group headquartered in Leverkusen, listed on the Frankfurt Xetra exchange as a DAX 40 constituent. The group runs three operating divisions: Pharmaceuticals (around 47% of 2024 sales), Crop Science (around 40%), and Consumer Health (around 13%). 2024 group sales were near 46.6 billion euros.
The Pharmaceuticals division sells prescription drugs across cardiology, oncology, women's health, and ophthalmology, with the anticoagulant Xarelto and the eye drug Eylea historically producing the largest single-product revenue lines. Both face loss-of-exclusivity through 2024-2025. The Crop Science division traces to the 2018 acquisition of Monsanto for 63 billion USD, which brought in the Roundup herbicide franchise and the resulting US glyphosate litigation. Bayer disclosed a 16 billion USD aggregate provision for that litigation by year-end 2024 and continues to settle and appeal claims. Consumer Health sells over-the-counter brands including Aspirin, Berocca, and Bepanthen.
Geographic revenue is roughly 28% Europe-Middle East-Africa, 32% North America, 25% Asia-Pacific, and 15% Latin America. Around 32% of sales reported in USD, which means EUR/USD moves carry significant translation exposure.
At LHFX you trade Bayer as a CFD on BAYGn, not as a shareholder. You profit or lose based on the Xetra-quoted EUR price moving in or against your position, and you can go long or short. You never receive the underlying share, voting rights, or cash dividends, but your account is credited or debited a dividend adjustment when BAYGn trades ex-dividend so economic exposure stays equivalent. Bayer cut its dividend to 0.11 EUR per share for 2023, paid in 2024, as part of a 3-year capital preservation plan. Maximum leverage is 1:20 and trading hours follow Xetra, roughly 03:00 to 11:30 ET, Monday to Friday.
What moves BAYGn
- 01US glyphosate litigation. Bayer set aside 16 billion USD in aggregate provisions through 2024 and continues to settle and appeal Roundup cases. Major court rulings (Supreme Court denials, large jury verdicts) routinely move BAYGn 5 to 10% on the day.
- 02Pharmaceutical pipeline readouts. Bayer is rebuilding its pipeline as Xarelto and Eylea hit loss of exclusivity. Phase 3 data for asundexian (CV) and elinzanetant (women's health) are watched closely by sell-side analysts.
- 03Crop Science volume and pricing. North American corn and soybean acreage estimates plus global agrochemical prices feed quarterly Crop Science revenue. Strong El Nino seasons compress demand and pricing.
- 04ECB rate path and EUR/USD. Roughly 32% of group sales report in USD. A weaker USD compresses translated revenue and tends to weigh on the stock, ahead of any operational data.
- 05Strategic review. CEO Bill Anderson, who took over in June 2023, launched a 'Dynamic Shared Ownership' restructuring plus a strategic review of business structure (potential separation of Consumer Health or Crop Science). Any update is a material catalyst.
How to trade BAYGn at LHFX
Open an LHFX account, fund it (minimum 10 USD), and add BAYGn to your MetaTrader 5 Market Watch. The symbol is denominated in EUR and P&L converts to your account base currency at end of day.
Spreads on BAYGn are raw, with a flat 3 USD per side commission. Maximum leverage is 1:20, so a 1,000 EUR position requires 50 EUR of margin.
Worked example. With Bayer quoted around 26 EUR (well below the 2015 peak above 140 EUR), opening 10 share equivalents of long BAYGn at 1:20 leverage requires roughly 13 EUR in margin (260 / 20). A 5% adverse move on that position costs 13 EUR, which is 100% of the margin posted. Scale to 50 share equivalents and you are at 65 EUR margin against a 65 EUR loss on a 5% drop. BAYGn typically trades in a 2 to 3% daily range given litigation overhang, with single-day moves of 5 to 10% common on US court rulings.
Set a stop loss before entry. The biggest single-session catalysts are US court rulings on glyphosate cases, quarterly earnings, and pharmaceutical Phase 3 data. None of those are reliably predictable in advance, which is one reason BAYGn has been one of the higher-volatility German large caps for the past five years.
Xetra closes at 11:30 ET. Overnight swap is charged on notional exposure and updates inside MT5 symbol specifications.
Risks specific to BAYGn
Bayer carries two specific risks worth highlighting. First, US litigation tail: the 16 billion USD provision covers known and modelled cases, but new mass tort filings or unfavourable Supreme Court rulings can re-open and expand the liability. Second, pharmaceutical patent cliff: Xarelto and Eylea loss of exclusivity are removing several billion euros of high-margin revenue, and the pipeline replacement depends on Phase 3 readouts that can disappoint.
Mitigations. Size positions so a 10% adverse move costs no more than 2 to 3% of your account, because BAYGn has produced multiple double-digit single-day moves on US court rulings since 2019. Set a stop loss on every position. Avoid holding leveraged positions across known catalyst dates (earnings, Phase 3 readouts, scheduled US trial dates). Use the demo account to size a few cycles first.
