USDJPY weekly recap: dollar firms toward 158.55, week of 2026-08-03

USDJPY opened at 157.584 and closed at 158.319, a gain of roughly 74 pips as the dollar tracked higher yields into the US jobs report.

Where USDZAR closed the week

You watched USDZAR open the week at 16.4544 and close at 16.3395. The pair printed a weekly high of 16.5545 on Monday and a weekly low of 16.2906 on Wednesday. The net move was a drop of about 115 pips, roughly 0.70 percent, meaning the rand gained ground against the dollar across the five sessions.

What moved price

The bundle carries no scheduled economic events for the closing week, so the action tracked the broader dollar tone. Monday started firm and tagged 16.5545, then sellers took control on Tuesday and Wednesday, dragging the close down to 16.3000. That midweek slide lined up with a softer greenback before the US jobs report referenced in the headlines.

By Thursday the dollar found a bid. ForexLive noted the USD moved higher with yields ahead of the US jobs report, and you saw USDZAR stabilise near 16.3386 into Friday's 16.3395 close. A firmer PBOC USD/CNY reference fix fed into the same late-week tone across emerging market currencies like the rand. Contrast that with a cleaner risk barometer such as AUD/USD, where the same dollar swings show up without the local rand overlay.

The week ahead

The bundle lists no high-impact calendar events for the upcoming week. With the schedule clear, dollar direction and the daily PBOC USD/CNY fix stay the main external drivers. If the dollar broadly extends higher and the CNY fix keeps landing firmer than estimates, USDZAR tends to grind back toward the top of its recent range. If the dollar softens and risk appetite holds, the rand tends to reclaim the week's lows. Watch the headlines for any fresh US data prints, since those can reset the tone quickly.

Positioning

LHFX client positioning shows 58.6 percent long and 41.4 percent short as of 2026-08-07. That skew leans toward dollar upside against the rand, so consensus is positioned for USDZAR to recover. A crowded long book can act as fuel for a squeeze if price keeps falling, since those longs eventually cover.

Levels to watch

The week's low at 16.2906 is the first floor. If price closes below it, the next obvious reference is the round 16.2500 area. On the upside, Friday closed at 16.3395 and the Monday high at 16.5545 caps the range. If price closes back above 16.4544, the weekly open, the top of the range comes back into play.
