USDJPY closed Wednesday at 159.793. That is 32 pips below Monday's 160.115 open, a slide of roughly 0.2 percent on the week so far. The range has been narrow. Wednesday printed the week's high at 160.39. The low still sits at Monday's 159.472, which leaves the whole week inside about 92 pips.
No scheduled release did the work. The move came from Beijing instead. The PBOC set its daily USD/CNY mid-point materially weaker than the Reuters estimate, and dollar-Asia caught a bid through the Wednesday morning hours. USDJPY used that bid to tag 160.39 and then handed the entire gain back before the close. The same session saw the New Zealand dollar sliding, and pressure across the commodity currencies showed up in AUD/USD as well. Wednesday's volume of 14,490 is a fraction of Monday's 63,177, so treat the rejection off 160.39 as thin-tape information rather than a verdict.
The calendar in this bundle carries no scheduled high-impact releases for Thursday or Friday, which puts the daily yuan fix and general dollar flow at the centre of the back half. If the PBOC keeps fixing the mid-point weaker than consensus the way it did Wednesday, the dollar side of this pair stays supported and the 160 handle gets tested again. If the fixes come back in line with estimates, the bid that produced Wednesday's high loses its source and the pair works back toward the Monday low. Watch the Tokyo open on both days, since that is where the fix lands and where the reaction has already shown up once this week.
As of Wednesday morning, 50.3 percent of positioning is long and 49.7 percent is short. That is as close to flat as this book gets. There is no crowd to squeeze on either side, which fits a week that has traded a 92 pip range and closed Wednesday within 5 pips of where Monday finished. Consensus midweek is that nobody has conviction yet.
160.00 is the line the pair is fighting over. Price closed above it Tuesday at 160.198 and pushed on to 160.39 Wednesday. The close came back underneath at 159.793. If sellers hold the round number as a ceiling into Thursday, the 159.472 Monday low is the obvious reference below and the week keeps its lower-high shape. If buyers reclaim 160.00 and defend it on a retest, Wednesday's 160.39 high becomes the level that decides whether this week resolves higher. You can track both levels live on our USDJPY pricing as the Tokyo session opens.
