USDJPY midweek: pinned near 158.27 after CPI wait, 2026-10-12

Where USDJPY stands midweek
USDJPY closed Wednesday at 158.274. Monday opened the week at 158.181, so you are up roughly 0.06 percent after three sessions. The high so far is 158.75, printed Monday. The low is 157.831, set Tuesday. That is 92 pips of total range, and today's session has used less than half of it, running 158.111 to 158.514.
What has driven price so far
Monday's push to 158.75 did not hold. The wires put that down to dollar supply rather than yen demand: the Americas wrap on 13 October read "Dollar retreats as traders await CPI", and Asia on 14 October opened with the dollar still softer into the same release. The one hard print of the week so far came from Beijing, where the PBOC fixed USD/CNY above the Reuters estimate, a weaker yuan setting that did nothing to lift the dollar against the yen. If you want to separate the two sides of this pair, GBP/JPY is the cleaner read on whether yen buying is doing any of the work.
What's still ahead
Our calendar carries no scheduled releases for the back half of this week, which makes US CPI the single piece of risk every headline in the bundle is positioned around. Two paths from here. A firmer CPI print pulls the dollar back off its lows, and a close above Tuesday's 158.53 open puts Monday's 158.75 high back in the conversation. A softer print extends the retreat the wires have already flagged, and 157.831 becomes the level bears test first. The 92 pip compression tells you the market is waiting rather than choosing.
Positioning right now
As of 06:09 UTC on 14 October, 50.3 percent of positioning is long and 49.7 percent is short. That is as close to a dead split as this pair gets. There is no crowded side to squeeze, which means the CPI reaction is more likely to be driven by fresh money than by stops.
The level that matters today
The 158.51 shelf is doing the work. Wednesday capped out at 158.514, within a few ticks of Tuesday's 158.53 open and high. It also sits just under the 158.75 week high. Hold above that shelf and the Monday top is the obvious reference. Lose 158.111, the session low, and 157.831 is the only thing between price and the 157.50 round number.
