What is TSLA?

Tesla is the most-watched single-name equity in the world, and the loudest. Here is how the share-price actually moves, what you are buying when you click buy on a CFD, and how to size a position so a Musk post at 03:00 UTC does not end your week.

TSLA in 60 seconds

  • Ticker for Tesla, Inc. on Nasdaq. The same company that builds the Model Y, the Cybertruck, Megapack, and the FSD software stack.
  • Roughly 1.8 million vehicles delivered in 2024, but the share-price multiple reflects autonomy and AI optionality, not the auto P&L.
  • Trades only during US cash-equity hours, 14:30 to 21:00 UTC, Monday to Friday. No pre-market or after-hours on the LHFX symbol.
  • Maximum leverage at LHFX is 1:20. Commission is $3 per side per standard lot (100 shares), so a 1.00 lot round trip costs $6 plus the live spread, scaling with size.
  • Earnings and quarterly delivery prints regularly produce single-session moves of 8 to 12 percent. Position size to survive those gaps.

What Tesla actually sells

Strip the narrative away and Tesla is three businesses bolted to one balance sheet. The largest is selling electric passenger vehicles in five model lines: Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. The Shanghai and Berlin plants serve regional markets directly, Fremont and Austin handle North America, and the Sparks gigafactory in Nevada produces battery cells and drive units that feed every assembly site.

The second business is stationary energy storage. Megapack ships to utility-scale grid projects, Powerwall lands in residential basements, and the Lathrop factory in California is the production hub. This segment is small in revenue terms but grows roughly twice as fast as the vehicle line and carries higher gross margin.

The third is services: Supercharging revenue from non-Tesla vehicles now that the NACS connector has become a North American standard, software upgrades sold on a one-time or subscription basis, used-vehicle remarketing, and out-of-warranty repair. None of this dominates the income statement, but Supercharging in particular is the part of the business that competitors cannot replicate inside one or two years.

What Tesla does not do explains some of the volatility. It does not advertise. It does not pay a dividend. It does not issue mid-quarter guidance. It does not break out FSD revenue at the line-item level. Investors fill those information gaps with conviction, which is why a single Musk post on X can move the share price more than a hundred-million-dollar sales miss from a traditional automaker.

Revenue mix and where the margin sits

Tesla's 2024 revenue split was roughly 78% automotive, 10% energy generation and storage, and 12% services. Margin profile differs by segment and that is what moves consensus estimates from quarter to quarter.

Automotive (vehicles plus regulatory credits)~78% of revenueThe vehicle gross margin is the single most-modelled line in TSLA research. It compressed from above 25% in 2022 to roughly 17 to 18% in 2024 after multiple price cuts. Regulatory credit sales to other automakers are pure margin but lumpy and unforecastable.
Energy generation and storage~10% of revenueMegapack deployments grew above 100% year on year through 2024. Gross margin runs higher than the auto segment and is the part of the story that bulls point to when delivery growth slows.
Services and other~12% of revenueIncludes Supercharging fees, FSD upgrades, used-vehicle sales, insurance in select states, and out-of-warranty repair. Smallest contributor to revenue, but Supercharging is the segment with the deepest moat.

Insider holdings are concentrated. Elon Musk owns roughly 13% of the float and has near-total influence over capital allocation, product direction, and how the company communicates with the market. There is no other US mega-cap where insider posting on social media is a material price driver.

What moves the TSLA share price

Quarterly delivery release

Tesla publishes global deliveries on day one or two of every new quarter, well before the formal earnings call. The 2024 quarterly range was about 387,000 in Q1 to 495,000 in Q4. A delivery miss of three to five percent versus consensus has produced single-session moves between five and ten percent.

Earnings call commentary

The numbers matter less than the call. Guidance on auto gross margin, Cybertruck ramp pace, robotaxi timing, and Optimus production are the lines that move the multiple. Earnings prints land roughly three weeks after quarter end, always after the New York close.

China registration data

About 22 percent of deliveries come from China. Weekly insurance-registration numbers from the China Passenger Car Association and BYD pricing actions hit during the Asian session and pre-position TSLA before the US open.

Musk on X

Posts about FSD versions, robotaxi geofence expansions, capital sales for xAI, or political activity move TSLA in a way no other large-cap equity moves on founder commentary. Treat the X feed as a price-sensitive headline source.

Regulatory and recall headlines

NHTSA investigations, FSD-related recall scopes, and EU type-approval decisions affect both the vehicle business and the autonomy story. These tend to land on weekdays during US hours and produce sharper intraday moves than steady news flow.

When TSLA actually trades

TSLA CFDs at LHFX track the Nasdaq cash session. The symbol is live from 14:30 to 21:00 UTC, Monday to Friday, which is 09:30 to 16:00 New York time. There is no extended-hours window on the LHFX feed. Pre-market action you see on a US retail screener is not tradable here, and the post-close move that follows an earnings release is only accessible from the next trading day's open.

Liquidity inside the regular session is not uniform. The first thirty minutes after 14:30 UTC absorbs overnight news flow and tends to set the daily range. Volume drops between 17:00 and 19:00 UTC during the New York lunch window, then rebuilds into the close as systematic flows rebalance. Spreads widen meaningfully in the first ten minutes after a quarterly delivery release or earnings re-open.

Holidays matter. The NYSE and Nasdaq holiday calendar dictates when TSLA can be traded. On half-day sessions like the day after Thanksgiving, the symbol closes at 18:00 UTC rather than 21:00 UTC. Plan exits around the published calendar; a position cannot be flattened on a US holiday even if other LHFX symbols stay open.

Trading TSLA as a CFD vs buying the share

A TSLA CFD and a Tesla share are not the same financial instrument. The decision is not about which is better. It is about which one matches your time horizon, your need for leverage, and whether you want shareholder rights.

AspectTSLA CFD at LHFXDirect Nasdaq share

If your view is multi-year and you want voting rights and corporate-action mail, buy the share through an equity broker. If your view is a delivery print, an earnings reaction, or a swing through a Musk-news cycle and you want the option to be short, a CFD is the cleaner tool.

Worked example: a $5,000 account taking a TSLA long

Account balance: $5,000. TSLA quoted at $310 on the open. You expect a delivery beat priced for later in the week and want a four-day position.

You buy 3 contracts of TSLA CFD. Notional exposure is 3 x $310 = $930. At the 1:20 cap, required margin is $46.50. Three shares is 0.03 lots, so round-trip commission is 0.03 x $3 x 2 = $0.18.

Risk check: a 7 percent adverse move on 3 shares is 3 x $310 x 0.07 = $65.10, plus the $0.18 commission. Total worst-case on this stop scenario is roughly $65, or about 1.3 percent of the $5,000 account. That is inside a sensible per-trade risk budget.

If TSLA prints the delivery beat and rallies 6 percent into your exit, the position gain is 3 x $310 x 0.06 = $55.80, less $0.18 commission, for a net $55.62 or about 1.1 percent on the account. The asymmetry is intentional: small position, defined risk, room to scale up only after the thesis is confirmed.

Hold the position for four sessions and an overnight swap is charged on each of three roll-overs. Check the per-symbol swap inside MT5 under Symbol Specifications before deciding to hold past Friday.

Execution is STP/ECN on MT5 with no dealing-desk intervention. Pending orders, market orders, and one-cancels-the-other tickets all behave as expected. Position-size first, leverage second, and never use the 1:20 cap as a target on a single-name equity that routinely gaps double digits.

What can hurt you on TSLA specifically

Single-name equities each have their own risk fingerprint. TSLA has two that are larger than they would be on a comparably sized US mega-cap.

Concentrated founder-influence risk

Elon Musk owns roughly 13 percent of the float and posts publicly several times a day. Statements on FSD progress, capital sales to fund xAI or political ventures, and political endorsements have repeatedly produced double-digit single-session moves on TSLA. No other large-cap US equity carries this profile. Treat the X feed as a Bloomberg headline source during US hours and as overnight gap risk between sessions.

Multiple-compression risk

TSLA trades at a forward earnings multiple roughly 5 to 10 times the average legacy automaker, priced as an autonomy and AI story rather than a vehicle business. Any quarter where the FSD timeline slips, the robotaxi geofence does not expand on schedule, or Optimus production is pushed back can compress that multiple sharply without any deterioration in the actual delivery numbers.

Leverage on a volatile single name

The 1:20 leverage cap is a ceiling, not guidance. On TSLA, a 10 percent intraday move on a maxed-out position wipes out 200 percent of the posted margin. Size by the percentage of account at risk per trade, not by the maximum permitted leverage.

Overnight gap and weekend gap

TSLA closes at 21:00 UTC on Friday and reopens at 14:30 UTC on Monday. Earnings, NHTSA announcements, China sales data, and Musk posts during the weekend can produce open-gaps of several percent. A leveraged position held across the weekend can move against you with no opportunity to manage it until US hours resume.

Swap accumulation on long holds

Overnight financing accrues every session a CFD position is held open. On a multi-week directional view, the cumulative swap can erase a meaningful share of the gross gain. For exposure measured in months or longer, owning the share through an equity broker is often the better economic choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a TSLA CFD the same thing as holding the actual Tesla share?

No, the two are different financial products with different rights attached. A CFD is a cash-settled contract that tracks the TSLA share price and pays the difference between your entry and your exit, settled in USD. You will not appear on the Tesla register, you will not be invited to the annual meeting, and you will not receive any communications from the company. If shareholder rights are part of why you want to be long, buy the share through an equity broker.

How much margin does a TSLA position actually tie up?

At the 1:20 leverage ceiling, margin equals notional exposure divided by 20. For a single share at a $300 quote that is $15 of margin. For ten shares the figure becomes $150, and for a hundred shares it is $1,500. Most retail traders run effective leverage well below the cap because TSLA volatility makes the headline figure dangerous; sensible sizing is built around per-trade dollar risk, not the maximum permitted ratio.

Can I sell short on TSLA without a stock-loan agreement?

Yes, that is one of the main reasons traders use a CFD on a single-name equity rather than a direct share. You open a sell ticket from the same MT5 platform, with the same 1:20 leverage ceiling and the same $3 per side commission. There are no locate fees and no hard-to-borrow flags. Overnight swap on a short position is calculated separately from longs; check the per-symbol rate inside MT5 Symbol Specifications before holding short across multiple sessions.

Why are there no pre-market or after-hours sessions on TSLA at LHFX?

The LHFX feed mirrors the Nasdaq regular session, which runs 14:30 to 21:00 UTC. Extended hours on US retail platforms have shallow order books and wide spreads that do not represent a reliable price for a CFD product. If a TSLA earnings release lands at 22:00 UTC, the first opportunity to trade the reaction at LHFX is the following day's 14:30 UTC open, which is also where the headline gap typically settles for retail participants.

Does Tesla pay a dividend that affects my CFD?

Tesla has paid no dividends across its public history and has not signalled an intention to change that. Dividend adjustments are therefore a non-event on TSLA CFDs today. If Tesla ever declared a cash dividend, the ex-date adjustment would be credited or debited to the open CFD position in line with the standard treatment used for every other dividend-paying stock CFD at LHFX.

What is the smallest TSLA trade I can place?

The minimum contract size on TSLA at LHFX is one share, displayed as 1.00 lots in the MT5 Order ticket. That means at a $300 quote you can take roughly $300 of notional exposure for $15 of margin at the 1:20 ceiling, with $3 commission on entry and $3 on exit. That granularity matters: it lets you size a starter position around the dollar risk you are willing to accept on a single TSLA setup.

Ready to trade TSLA?

Minimum deposit is $10. Card and crypto deposits fund the account in roughly 20 minutes. TSLA is live on MT5 during US cash-equity hours at 1:20 maximum leverage and $3 per side commission.
