Where USDTRY stands midweek

USDTRY closed Wednesday's bar at 49.3645 after opening the week at 49.32575 on Monday. That is a gain of 0.03875, or 0.08 percent, over three sessions. The week's high so far is 49.37602, printed Wednesday, and the low is 49.24795, set during Monday's session. Every daily close has been higher than the one before it.

What has driven price so far

No tier-one data hit the pair on Monday or Tuesday, and the tape shows it: Tuesday traded in a 49.29898 to 49.35368 band and never looked back toward Monday's 49.24795 low. The one live input Wednesday morning came from China, where the PBOC fixed the yuan mid-point weaker than the Reuters estimate, a lean that reads dollar-positive across emerging market crosses. The rest is a market standing still ahead of 12:30 GMT.

What's still ahead

US CPI at 12:30 GMT Wednesday is the event that decides the back half of this week. Headline CPI y/y is forecast at 3.6 percent against 3.4 percent previously, with core CPI m/m seen at 0.2 percent after 0.3 percent. If the headline beats 3.6 percent and USDTRY holds above 49.35, the week's 49.37602 high is the first thing bulls have to clear. A soft core print cools the dollar bid and puts Tuesday's 49.29898 open back into focus. Thursday stacks US PPI m/m at 0.6 percent forecast alongside retail sales m/m at 0.3 percent after 1.2 percent, both at 12:30 GMT. Friday brings Fed Chairman Warsh at 03:30 GMT, a high-impact speaking slot that can reprice the dollar leg without any data at all. For the dollar-funded crosses, EUR/USD gets a second Lagarde appearance Wednesday and will likely react faster than the lira pair, which tends to lag broad dollar moves rather than lead them.

The level that matters today

49.37602 is the line right now. It is the week's high and it was printed in Wednesday's session, so it is fresh. A CPI-driven push through it opens the 49.40 round number, where the pair has no recent reference from this week. Fail there and the pair drops back into the 49.29898 to 49.35368 band that contained all of Tuesday, with Monday's 49.24795 low as the floor that defines whether this week's grind higher is still intact.
