How last week left XAUUSD

XAUUSD opened Monday 2026-10-19 at 4184.86 and closed Friday 2026-10-23 at 3997.70. That is a net loss of 187.16 dollars, or 4.47% across the five sessions, with the week high at 4190.25 printed in the first hours and the week low at 3975.62 printed on the last day. Thursday did most of the damage: price opened at 4125.31, traded down to 4021.13 and settled at 4023.47, a single-session drop of 101.84 dollars that Saxo Bank attributed to long liquidation overwhelming ETF buying.

What this week is about

There is no tier-one scheduled release pinned to these five sessions, so the week is about flow rather than a data print. The live theme is the one that broke the 4000 handle on Friday: holders cutting length faster than passive demand can absorb it. Forexlive framed it as gold's worst week in four months, with firmer oil feeding fresh Fed hike speculation. That matters because a rates-driven repricing hits gold through the discount rate, not through risk appetite, and it tends to keep selling pressure on even when headlines look supportive.

The counterweight is official sector demand. Goldman's 79-tonne central bank estimate moved into mainstream coverage over the weekend, alongside reporting that reserves are shifting toward London. Sustained official buying is slow money and rarely stops a liquidation in its tracks, but it changes what happens after one. Watch whether dips below the 4000 area get absorbed quickly or left alone. Scenarios for the week

If the oil-led Fed hike narrative keeps running and price spends sessions below Friday's low at 3975.62, the prior consolidation shelf from earlier in October is no longer overhead support, and the move reads as trend continuation rather than a flush. If instead buyers reclaim Thursday's close at 4023.47 and hold it into a daily settlement, the 4000 break looks like a liquidation wick and the 4104.76 to 4130.39 zone from Tuesday and Wednesday comes back into view. A third path is chop: price oscillating around 4000 with neither side able to close away from it, which is the usual outcome when positioning is being unwound without a catalyst. Cross-check against Silver, since a precious metals complex moving together points to a macro driver while gold falling alone points to gold-specific flow.

Positioning into the new week

As of 2026-10-26, client positioning sits at 56.2% long and 43.8% short. The book is still net long after a 4.47% weekly decline, which means the liquidation Saxo Bank described has not fully worked through retail accounts. A long skew into a falling market leaves a supply of positions that can be forced out on further weakness, and it is one reason downside moves in this condition often extend further than the news flow alone would justify. A flip toward balance would tell you more than any single candle.

Levels to watch

Friday's low at 3975.62 is the first reference. Below it, last week offers no price history to lean on. The 4000 round number sits just above and is now overhead rather than underfoot. Thursday's close at 4023.47 marks the ceiling of the breakdown session, while 4130.39, Monday's close and Tuesday's open, caps the upper half of last week's range. The week high at 4190.25 is the full retracement mark. These are reference levels drawn from last week's price action, not entry signals, and they describe where decisions have already been made rather than where the next one should be.
