GBPUSD week ahead: what to watch from 2026-08-03

GBPUSD closed last week near 1.3491 after a strong Thursday and Friday push, and the new week opens with the calendar quiet and positioning evenly split.

How last week left AUDUSD

AUDUSD opened Monday at 0.69936 and closed Friday at 0.70395, a net gain of roughly 46 pips on the week. The pair spent the first three sessions grinding lower, printing a Wednesday low at 0.69218, before a sharp Thursday reversal cleared 0.70000 and carried into Friday's 0.70441 high.

What this week is about

The bundle carries no scheduled high-impact events for the five sessions ahead, so the story is flow and rate differentials rather than a single fixed catalyst. The immediate tone is set by the US Dollar, with early headlines flagging US involvement in currency intervention around USD/JPY and a firmer PBOC USD/CNY reference fix that came in above the Reuters estimate. A weaker Yuan fix tends to pressure the Aussie given the China trade link.

With the calendar quiet, watch how AUDUSD holds Friday's break above 0.70000. The China fixing behaviour and broad US Dollar direction are the levers to track through the week. Open an LHFX account to trade AUDUSD this week.

Scenarios for the week

If AUDUSD sustains trade above last week's 0.70441 high early in the week, the next reference zone is the 0.70500 round number and the space above it. If sellers reject that level, Thursday's breakout point near 0.70000 comes back into focus as the line that separates continuation from a fade. A firmer US Dollar that also weighs on EUR/USD would raise the odds of a retest of the mid-week lows near 0.69218.

Positioning into the new week

Positioning sits at 46.4 percent long against 53.6 percent short as of 2026-08-03. That modest short skew means consensus is leaning against the late-week rally, favouring a fade back toward the prior range. A crowded short book can also cut both ways, since a continued push higher forces those positions to cover.

Levels to watch

Last week's 0.70441 high is the first upside reference, with the 0.70000 round number acting as the pivot beneath current price. The Wednesday low at 0.69218 marks the deeper downside reference if the rally unwinds. These are reference levels for context, not entry signals.
