About Dow Jones 30

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (US30) is the oldest continuously calculated US stock index, dating to 1896. It tracks 30 large US blue-chip companies hand-picked by the editors of the Wall Street Journal to represent the broader US economy. Unlike most modern indices, US30 is price-weighted rather than market-cap-weighted: a stock priced at $400 has more influence on the index than a stock priced at $50, regardless of the underlying company's market value. This methodology means high-priced names like UnitedHealth, Goldman Sachs, and Microsoft can dominate index moves on individual earnings days. Constituents are reviewed periodically and the makeup has shifted significantly over decades. At LHFX you trade US30 as a CFD with leverage up to 1:200, $3 per side commission. You do not own the underlying stocks. Dividend adjustments apply on ex-dividend dates. US30 is moderately less volatile than SPX500 in typical conditions because it concentrates in mature blue-chip names rather than growth stocks. It can lag NAS100 during tech-led rallies and outperform during defensive-rotation periods.

What moves US30

  • 01Federal Reserve policy and US economic data. US30 reacts to FOMC, CPI, NFP, and PCE releases with similar mechanics to SPX500.
  • 02Earnings of high-priced constituents. The top 5 by price weight (which shifts over time) typically include names like UnitedHealth, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Home Depot, and Caterpillar. Their earnings reports drive disproportionate single-day moves.
  • 03Industrial and consumer-cyclical health. US30 includes Caterpillar, Boeing, 3M, Walmart, and Home Depot. ISM Manufacturing PMI, retail sales, and consumer confidence data move the index.
  • 04Sector rotation. US30 leans more value/defensive than NAS100; rotations toward value lift US30 relative to growth-heavy indices.
  • 05Global growth signals. As an industrial-heavy index, US30 is sensitive to global demand outlook, particularly from major Caterpillar/Boeing customer regions like China.

How to trade US30 at LHFX

Add US30 to your MT5 Market Watch. Spreads tight during US hours; commission $3 per side; leverage up to 1:200. US30 volatility is moderate. Daily 0.5 to 1.2% moves are routine; 2%+ days happen on FOMC, major data, or top-weight earnings surprises. Size positions so a 1.5-2% adverse move costs no more than 1.5-2% of your account. Watch the high-price-weight names' earnings dates and the FOMC calendar. Industrial PMI and retail sales releases are also significant. Worked example. On a $1,000 account at US30 38,000, opening 0.05 lots requires roughly $95 in margin at 1:200 (verify contract specs). A 1.5% adverse move costs $285, or 28.5% of account. Size down significantly: 0.01 lots gives ~$60 risk on a 1.5% move, or 6% of account.

Risks specific to US30

US30's price-weighting methodology means a small number of high-priced stocks can drive index moves disproportionately. A 5% adverse move on a $400-priced constituent can move the index more than a 5% move on a more typical $100-priced constituent. Two specific risk factors: concentration in 30 names (vs 500 for SPX500) means single-stock event risk is higher; and the industrial/consumer-cyclical tilt means US30 is more sensitive to recession signals than tech-heavy indices. Mitigations. Start at effective leverage of 1:15 or below. Stop loss on every position. Watch the earnings calendar of the top 5-10 price-weighted constituents. Size down ahead of FOMC and major US data.
