You watched GBPUSD open Monday at 1.34908 and close Thursday at 1.34523. The week's high printed at 1.35025 on Monday, and the low came the same day at 1.34168. Net, cable shed roughly 39 pips across the week, a modest decline that masked a choppy path back and forth through the 1.3450 area.
The dollar set the tone. According to the InvestingLive Asia-Pacific wrap on 6 August, the USD moved higher alongside Treasury yields as traders positioned ahead of the US jobs report. That bid pinned cable below its Monday high and kept the pair capped under 1.3490 for the balance of the week.
There was a second thread out of China. The PBOC set its USD/CNY reference rate on 7 August weaker than the Reuters estimate. A softer yuan fix nudged the broad dollar firmer at the margin, which added a light headwind to sterling into the Friday session.
The bundle carries no scheduled high-impact economic events for the upcoming week. With the calendar thin, price action is more likely to trade off the broad dollar tone and any fresh headlines. If dollar strength persists in line with the yields story from this week, sterling tends to stay pressured toward the lower end of its recent range. If yields ease and the dollar bid fades, cable typically finds room to retest the upper boundary of the week's range.
LHFX client positioning sits almost perfectly balanced: 50.1 percent long against 49.9 percent short as of 7 August. That near-even split tells you there is no strong retail consensus here. When the crowd is this flat, moves tend to be driven by fresh catalysts rather than the unwinding of a lopsided book, so watch the dollar tape closely.
The week's high at 1.35025 is the first ceiling. If price closes above it, the round 1.3550 handle comes into focus. On the downside, the Monday low at 1.34168 is the line that matters. A close below there puts the 1.3400 round number back in play. The 1.3450 pivot, where the pair spent much of the week, is the tie-breaker between those two paths, and it is worth comparing sterling's tone against EUR/USD for a read on whether the move is dollar-wide.
