Hedera (HBAR) is the native token of Hedera Hashgraph, a public distributed ledger that uses hashgraph consensus rather than a traditional blockchain data structure. Hashgraph is a directed acyclic graph (DAG) consensus protocol developed by Leemon Baird and used under license by Hedera; it achieves Byzantine fault tolerance with mathematically proven fairness on transaction ordering. Hedera is governed by the Hedera Governing Council, a body of up to 39 major institutions that has included Google, IBM, Boeing, Standard Bank, LG, ServiceNow, Shinhan Bank, and others.
